Dale’s Blanket
Dale wanted a blanket big enough to wrap up on the sofa of an evening in a chilly Edinburgh flat. He chose a selection of bright blue, green and yellow and I chose a chunky warm 100% Peruvian Highland wool woven into a bold check.
Once a piece of weaving comes off the loom it requires ‘wet-finishing’ to help the yarns blend and mesh to become a unified piece rather than distinct warp and weft, and to allow the yarn to ‘full’ (relax and open out to its full fibrous glory). During this process the piece shrinks a bit, and this is also a chance to slightly felt the piece if desired.
As you might be imagining, this can be a bit ‘trial and error’, especially with a yarn not previously sampled! With Dale’s blanket I took that process slightly too far and the finished piece was slightly smaller than planned (though still huge) and wonderfully thick and warm. So, a worrisome moment for me, but a good result, phew!
“I received this a few months ago and couldn’t be happier! After picking out my favourite colours and yarns, I was presented with this beautiful, well-made, and cosy blanket! It holds up very well and livens up my living room wonderfully. I would highly recommend!” - Dale, Edinburgh, November 2023
