Oak Chair from 1938
This Oak chair was manufactured in 1938 by B. North and Sons of West Wycombe, the centre of English chair making for many years. My mother bought it at auction in the 1960s and it was in family use until about 10 years ago, when it suffered severe damage, with both front legs being broken.
I took the chair into my workshop where it sat awaiting my attention, moving with me to a different workshop, and waiting again. I finally started the repairs last year, removing both front legs, trimming off the damaged sections, attaching new material and re-turning the top round tenons. The chair was then re-assembled cleaned, refinished and finally re-upholstered, replacing the existing vinyl with a heavyweight tweed.
I’ve enjoyed bringing the chair back into use and, through the repair process, connecting with the previous makers.
